What Is Corneal Cross-Linking?
Corneal cross-linking (CXL) is a minimally invasive procedure designed to strengthen the cornea and slow or stop the progression of conditions that cause it to become thin and weak, such as keratoconus. Rather than reshaping the cornea, the treatment helps stabilize its structure, reducing the risk of further bulging and vision loss over time.
The procedure combines specially formulated riboflavin (vitamin B2) eye drops with controlled ultraviolet (UV) light. The riboflavin saturates the corneal tissue, and when activated by the UV light, it creates additional bonds or “cross-links” between the collagen fibers that give the cornea its strength. These new bonds make the cornea more rigid and better able to maintain its natural shape.
The primary goal of corneal cross-linking is to preserve your existing vision by preventing the condition from worsening. Although the procedure does not typically restore vision on its own, stabilizing the cornea can make vision correction with glasses or contact lenses more effective and may reduce the need for more invasive treatments, such as a corneal transplant, in the future.
